A DUMP truck crashed into a famous landmark in Bulacan, hurting the truck's driver and passenger on Thursday, February 22, along MacArthur Highway, Barangay Tikay, Malolos City.

Based on the police report, a Foton truck with license plate number CAK 1696 was traversing the southbound lane of MacArthur Highway when the driver fell asleep at around 4:56 a.m.

Witnesses said the truck loaded with sand did not slow down when it hit the concrete pillar of the welcome arch at the boundary of Malolos and Guiguinto.

The police identified the driver as Ronald Atayde, 32, and the passenger/helper as Roy Atayde, 31. Both are residents of Purok 4, San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija.

The police said that the helper sustained a serious injury as he suffered a broken right leg and was transferred from Bulacan Medical Center to Paolino J. Garcia Hospital in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.

The accident caused a heavy flow of traffic in both lanes on Thursday morning.

The arch was popularly called the Centennial Arch as it was renovated during the centennial celebration of the Philippine Independence in 1998.
