Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's visit to Hawaii is part of a Pacific tour that has angered Beijing. Given a grand welcome, Lai emphasized democracy and partnerships in his public appearances. China's foreign ministry condemned the US for hosting Lai, warning against any moves towards Taiwan's independence. Lai's tour includes stops in the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Palau, and Guam.
