BNP may approach interim Govt to secure release of ex-ministers

By Economic Times - 3 months ago
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and pro-Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami are reportedly planning to petition Bangladesh's interim government for the release of key figures convicted in the country's largest arms smuggling case. The parties aim to secure bail for former deputy ministers Lutfuzzaman Babar and Abdus Salam Pintu, both convicted in anti-terror cases. The arms smuggling incident in 2004 involved an attempt to smuggle weapons through Chittagong port, allegedly for Indian insurgent groups. This move follows the recent release of BNP leader Khaleda Zia and raises concerns about the resurgence of pro-BNP and Jamaat influence in Bangladesh's political landscape.
