Scientists, a journalist and even a bakery worker are among those convicted of treason in Russia

Over the past decade, Russia has experienced a significant increase in treason and espionage cases. Prosecutions began to grow after 2014, when Russia illegally annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine and supported a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine. The crackdown on foreign intelligence services has ensnared scientists, journalists, and ordinary citizens.
