White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby clarified that funds from a US sanction waiver allowing Iraq to purchase energy from Iran will not go to the Iranian government. The waiver, renewed every three months, aims to help Iraq transition away from Iranian energy dependency. Kirby emphasized that the money goes to vendors providing humanitarian assistance to the Iranian people, not to the Iranian government. The US State Department reiterated that no money has been permitted to enter Iran under these waivers.
