UN agency reports over 8,500 migrants died worldwide last year, a record since tallies began in 2014

A record-high number of 8,565 migrants died worldwide in 2023, with the Mediterranean Sea crossing experiencing the largest increase. Most deaths were due to drowning. Syrians, Afghans, and others fled conflicts towards Europe. Asia and Africa also saw significant rises in deaths among Iranians, Rohingya refugees, and migrants passing through remote areas.
