5 policemen injured in clash with militants in Bonifacio Day protest

MANILA, Philippines — At least five policemen were injured in a clash with militants who pushed their way to Mendiola near Malacanang during a protest on Saturday.

Maj. Philip Ines, spokesman for the Manila Police District (MPD), said authorities were considering filing charges against the rallyists involved in the altercation.

"While we respect the right to free speech and expression, Mendiola is not designated as a Freedom Park, and demonstrations are not allowed in that area," Ines said.

The injured police officers are currently receiving medical attention, and authorities are reviewing the incident to determine accountability.

Protesters were commemorating Bonifacio Day by voicing their grievances against the government. A clash ensued when police prevented the rallyists from advancing towards Mendiola, a historically significant site for demonstrations.

No immediate statement was released by the militants on the incident.

Authorities reiterated their call for peaceful and lawful protests, emphasizing that public safety remains their priority.
