Google used influence, ultimatum to cut deal on California news

Google planned to invest $110 million in California's journalism sector, but requested taxpayer funding of $70 million. Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks sought Governor Gavin Newsom's support for the deal, even as the state faced a budget deficit. A handshake agreement was reached in late August, and a written framework now exists with some provisions yet to be finalized.
